The Murfreesboro Medical Clinic (MMC) Foundation and Comprehensive Breast Center recently awarded the Crystal Scholarship to seven local students: Karigan Bost, Kristen Bost, Caitlyn Burdick, Madison Pearson, Hunter Shelton, Isaac Smith, and Abigail Vanderheyden. This scholarship, named after MMC Comprehensive Breast Center patient, Crystal Brown, was established to assist children of Murfreesboro Medical Clinic’s breast cancer patients in pursuing their education beyond high school. Her son, Michael, became a recipient of the inaugural Crystal Scholarship in 2019
It is no secret that the journey of a breast cancer patient is difficult; it not only affects the individual, but every member of the family. This scholarship acknowledges the hardships faced by families grappling with the impacts of cancer. It stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of those affected, and a tribute to the continued encouragement they receive from their families, especially their children.
The hope of the MMC Foundation is that this scholarship can offer a small measure of support and encourage the children of MMC’s breast cancer patients to pursue their dreams. Dr. Lisa White, MMC Comprehensive Breast Surgeon, says, “It is our honor to know these families and to be able to support their children as they take the next step in their lives. We look forward to following along their journey.”
The MMC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization to promote improved health care services in Rutherford County and around the Middle Tennessee region. In addition to the Crystal Scholarship, the MMC Foundation awards the David & Yolando Chatman Scholarship to an individual pursuing a medical degree who is from a minority group traditionally underrepresented in medicine. The Foundation also funds the Hearts and Hands Program which supports 3 local charities chosen by MMC employees each year.
