The Concussion Specialist is a clinic overseen by Utpal Patel, M.D., who is certified by ImPact, a national concussion program dedicated to protecting and aiding students' health in sports.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of a Concussion?

Frequently, the signs and symptoms of a concussion can be hard to describe. However, they can also be quite debilitating. They generally break down into four categories: cognitive, sleep, mood, and migraine symptoms. One of the most common symptoms is headache or pressure that increases throughout the day. Other symptoms can vary in degree, but the following list is a basic guideline of signs and symptoms to look for in determining concussion from a blow, jolt, or bump to the head.

  • Headache, pressure
  • Feeling lethargic, tired
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Irritability
  • Mood changes
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Difficulty focusing, paying attention

Utpal Patel, M.D.

Dr. Patel is a board certified internist with MMC's Internal & Family Medicine department. He is also a certified ImPact Concussion Specialist, and treats individuals over the age of 15 who have suffered concussion type injuries. Dr. Patel also provides services for pre-participation baseline testing. Our on-site CT and MRI imaging and physical therapy provide the complete set of resources needed to prevent further injury and guide individuals back to health. He has been instrumental in developing and overseeing Middle Tennessee State University athletic department’s concussion protocols and management policies.
