ABOUT DR. MACKENS

Originally from Murfreesboro, Dr. Austin Mackens graduated from Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee where he earned a B.A. in Biology with a minor in Biochemistry and graduated cum laude. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2010 and completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee, Jackson in 2013.

Dr. Mackens has extensive experience in emergency medicine and served as the Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital Emergency Department medical director for 3 years prior to joining MMC. During that tenure, he was a member of the Vanderbilt Bedford Board of Directors and Medical Executive Committee while also practicing as a full-time emergency medicine physician. He was also a member of the American Physician Partners Stroke Task Force and was responsible for training over 2,300 providers nationwide on appropriate stroke recognition and treatment.

Dr. Mackens' passion for primary care and preventative medicine intensified during his years working in an E.R. environment. The daily witness of patients with acute medical conditions that might have been prevented with early intervention was a pivotal decision point in returning to his original passion for primary and preventative medicine. Additionally, the desire to know and foster long-term relationships with patients was a significant deciding factor, in that physicians working in an E.R. environment often don’t know patient outcomes

Dr. Mackens was raised in Murfreesboro, TN where he met and married his wife Jessica (Anderson) Mackens. Dr. and Mrs. Mackens have three children: Abigail, Maddie Kate, and Everett. They all attend Providence Christian Academy (PCA) where Mrs. Mackens is also a high school math teacher. Dr. and Mrs. Mackens believe in the priorities of faith, family and work and that these priorities are key to thrive in a healthy family and as members of the community. The family attends World Outreach Church in Murfreesboro, TN. Dr. Mackens is an avid outdoorsman and loves to hunt, fish, and camp. He also loves sports and played rugby at the University of TN and football at Maryville College. Dr. Mackens and his family are avid travel and adventure enthusiasts and plan to visit all 50 states before the children leave for college.
