ABOUT DR NEWTON Dr. Newton is the only full-time practicing Physiatrist in Murfreesboro. His practice focuses on pain relief and restoring function lost due to nerve, muscle, bone, brain and spinal cord injuries or illnesses through non-surgical and minimally invasive techniques. With a subspecialty in Pain Medicine, Dr. Newton works with both acute and chronic pain patients to develop customized courses of treatment that may include one or more non-surgical pain relief treatments including therapeutic exercise, medications, injections – including joint and spine, and minimally invasive procedures such as spinal cord stimulation. Dr. Newton also specializes in electrodiagnostic medicine. This area focuses on the diagnosis of nerve disorders though nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG). This is a common test used to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome.
Dr. Newton’s fundamental approach to medicine comes from his training as an Osteopathic Physician. One of the main tenets of this approach to medicine is the body’s inherent means to heal itself. Being trained as an Osteopathic Physician, Dr. Newton focuses his treatment on the whole body through a holistic approach. His formal medical education was completed at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2002. Upon graduation, Dr. Newton was commissioned as a Captain in the US Army and completed residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. At Walter Reed, he was a part of the development of the first Army Center of Excellence for Amputee Care and served on the PM&R Service that received national recognition for exceptional care. He served as Chief Resident while at Walter Reed and graduated with residency research and academic honors. He was honorably discharged from the Army with the rank of Major in May 2009.
Dr. Newton first came to Murfreesboro in May 2009 after serving seven years as a Physician in the Army Medical Corps. He resides in Murfreesboro with his wife and two daughters. Dr. Newton’s spare time revolves around his wife and children. When not in the office you can find him at his daughter’s karate classes or horse shows wearing his “Barn Dad” hat.
